Signature cards with professional attribute offer additional features compared to traditional signature cards by integrating professional information into the certificate. This professional attribute provides enhanced transparency in electronic documents. The cards are issued as physical smartcards and offer the same level of security and benefits as the standard signature card, including legally binding electronic signatures and identity verification.
The additional integration of professional information into the certificate makes them the ideal solution for professional identities and legally binding electronic documents. Examples of use include verifying electronic expert opinions, or indicating the role of a signatory in the justice sector or within the electronic case file (eAkte).

The Three Product Variants of the Signature Cards with Professional Attribute
The Profession D-Trust Card is designed for members of regulated professions who use qualified electronic signatures. After confirmation by the responsible chamber or authority, the respective profession is recorded in the “Admission” field of the certificate. The professional title is selected from a predefined list and is clearly shown in the certificate.
The Expert D-Trust Card is designed specifically for court-appointed experts. The scope of appointment or the relevant field of expertise are stored in the additional information section of the qualified certificate. Expert attributes are confirmed by an IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce) or a Chamber of Crafts in Germany. The expert attribute is recorded in accordance with the official certificate of appointment, making the professional appointment transparent.
The Patent Attorney ID Plus serves not only as a visual identification ID card, but also includes additional eIDAS-compliant authentication and signature certificates. This enables the creation of qualified electronic signatures and more. The Patent Attorney ID Plus can be used in particular for electronically signing written submissions, for example to the Federal Patent Court and the Federal Court of Justice, as well as for filings via DPMAdirektPro.

- The D-Trust Card Assistant software for card initialisation and PIN changes is provided free of charge.
- If needed, a chip card reader can be obtained from the REINER SCT shop.

Signature cards are always ordered via the D-Trust portal. It is essential that you register in the D-Trust Portal and place the order via a personal account. Under this personal account, you will later receive additional functionalities in the D-Trust Portal, such as reordering without further identity verification or a blocking option for your card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Currently, D-Trust does not offer the option of including academic degrees in the certificates, with the exception of the PhD title, provided it is noted in the identification document. All certificate contents must be verifiable by D-Trust.
D-Trust does not include designations such as “Management” or “Authorised Signatory” as professional attributes. However, you can specify your function as additional information in the certificate extensions, provided it can be verified in a public register such as the commercial register.
Professional attributes are useful for signatures in electronic legal transactions, for complaints, notices, expert opinions, final reports, economic and tax audits, electronic tax returns with ELSTER-Plus, for registering civil status electronically, for quality management documentation, design drawings, construction plans, contracts, employee leasing, business correspondence and applications for industrial property rights at the DPMA. When applying carbon leakage compensation via the German Emissions Trading Authority (DeHSt), a professional attribute is mandatory for the auditors’ signatures.
