Qualified Seal ID – the company stamp in a digital world

Creating advanced electronic seals

Qualified Seal ID ensures the origin and integrity of data

In the age of progressive digital administration, digital processes are increasingly becoming a daily occurrence. In practice, for users this means legal, seamless sealing of documents. Seamless means that the documents no longer need to be printed, stamped and scanned, as the process is completely digital. This is not only sensible and efficient when working from home. It closes a gap in digital communication, ensures the authenticity of digital documents and prevents them from being altered unnoticed.

Your benefits at a glance

  • Advanced electronic seals based on a qualified certificate according to eIDAS
  • Flat rate with one-time purchase
  • Delivery of a soft token or certificate (no additional hardware required)

Electronic seals ensure the origin and integrity of data

From a technical perspective, the Qualified Seal ID ensures the guaranteed origin and integrity of digital documents. In concrete terms, this means the sealed document is safe from manipulation and the sealing organisation is always clearly identifiable. The recipient can identify this by reviewing the “proper” seal (green tick mark) in Acrobat Reader, among other things.

The Qualified Seal ID is always delivered as a soft certificate for use in server environments. Unlike a signature or seal card, no

card reader or middleware is required. The soft certificate is provided through our Managed PKI solution Certificate Service Manager (CSM). Keys can either be generated on the customer's end or by D-Trust.

Frequently asked questions

The eIDAS regulation governs the use of trust services throughout Europe, including for electronic seals. Any seal corresponds with the corporate stamps and governmental seals in the analogue world.

This technology guarantees the origin and integrity of digital documents. Every recipient of an electronically sealed document can use e.g. free PDF readers at any time to check which organisation was issued the certificate by a Trust Service Provider (TSP) such as D-Trust. In addition, it makes it easy to identify document manipulations.

The typical application scenario is sealing PDF/A documents. The digital seal is then embedded in the PDF document. However, XML documents can also be sealed, in which case the seal can be embedded or generated as a separate file.

"The Qualified Seal ID is provided through our Managed PKI solution Certificate Service Manager (CSM). Keys can either be generated on the customer's end or by D-TRUST.

The Qualified Seal ID is issued in form of a soft certificate or soft token for use in client and server environments. This means that unlike a signature or seal card, a card reader or middleware is not required.

When the seal key is generated by the customer, we issue the corresponding seal certificate. Alternatively, you can also obtain the seal as a full soft token.

The soft token is an encrypted file in PKCS#12 format which contains the private seal key and the corresponding certificate chain. The respective password is required to use the seal.

The Qualified Seal ID is based on a qualified seal certificate used for advanced sealing. The root of trust is therefore the European eIDAS Trusted List (EUTL) used by PDF readers and signature software to verify signatures. Adobe Acrobat Reader also uses EUTL and therefore recognises the Qualified Seal ID as trustworthy.

There are no limitations.

The Qualified Seal ID is obtained as a certificate through the Certificate Service Manager, the Managed PKI platform of D-Trust. For small volumes, the Qualified Seal ID can also be ordered as a single certificate from distributors.

Yes. The EU-wide digital certification platform, Europass, supports advanced electronic seals and therefore also the Qualified Seal ID. For this case, we expressly recommend the RSA-PSS version of the Qualified Seal ID. You can find the exact seal requirements for Europass (European digital education certificates) here: https://europa.eu/europass/digital-credentials/issuer/#/home
